When we install and manage commercial pet waste stations for HOAs, apartment complexes, and dog parks across the Las Vegas valley, the primary goal is simple: make sure the dispenser never runs out of bags. If the bags are there, residents are much more likely to clean up after their dogs, keeping the shared greenbelts and trails clear of waste.
However, when setting up the commercial service schedule, property managers must choose which type of bag we restock. We restock three main options: plain plastic, biodegradable, and compostable bags. This explains the differences to help a board make the right choice for their community.
Plain plastic bags
Standard, plain plastic bags are the workhorse of the pet waste removal industry. They are highly durable, tear-resistant, and reliably fit almost every commercial roll dispenser on the market.
The primary advantage of plain bags is cost and reliability. They are the most economical option, which is important for large master-planned communities that go through hundreds of bags a week. They also contain the odor and moisture of the waste very effectively while sitting in the lidded waste bin waiting for the trash service.
Biodegradable bags
Biodegradable bags are designed to break down faster than traditional plastic when exposed to the elements. They are often chosen by communities looking for a more environmentally conscious option without moving fully to compostable materials.
It is important to note that “biodegradable” simply means the material will eventually break down into smaller pieces; it does not promise a specific timeline, especially when the bag is buried deep in a municipal landfill without access to oxygen and sunlight. However, they offer a middle ground in terms of price and environmental intent.
Compostable bags
Compostable bags are made from plant-based materials, such as cornstarch, and are designed to break down completely into natural elements under specific composting conditions. They are the most environmentally friendly option.
The trade-off is durability and cost. Compostable bags are generally more expensive than plain or biodegradable options. Because they are designed to break down, they have a shorter shelf life and can be slightly less tear-resistant if left in a hot dispenser for an extended period. Furthermore, to truly compost, they must be processed in a commercial composting facility that accepts pet waste, which is not always how municipal trash is handled.
Making the choice
For most commercial properties in Las Vegas, the priority is maintaining a sanitary environment and keeping costs predictable. Standard plain bags remain a very common choice for high-traffic areas.
Whichever option an HOA or property manager selects, our service remains the same. Our route technicians will monitor the inventory, thread the new bag rolls into the dispenser so they pull smoothly, and empty the waste bins on a reliable weekly or twice-weekly schedule.
