During the cooler months in the Las Vegas valley, our regular route schedule runs smoothly throughout the day. But when summer arrives, the environment in a typical backyard changes drastically. From June through September, we officially shift all our residential and commercial routes to a 6 AM start time.
This early start is not just a preference, it is a vital safety policy for our technicians and a necessary step to check that we can provide thorough service across the entire city.
The reality of the desert heat
Las Vegas averages over 290 sunny days a year, and the summer highs routinely cross 100 degrees. While the air temperature is punishing enough, the reality inside a walled-in backyard is much worse.
Most newer properties in Summerlin, Enterprise, and North Las Vegas feature decorative rock beds and artificial turf. These surfaces act as heat sinks. Artificial turf, in particular, traps and radiates heat, often reaching surface temperatures 30 to 40 degrees higher than the surrounding air. When a technician is walking a tight grid pattern over hot synthetic grass or baked gravel in the mid-afternoon, the risk of heat exhaustion is severe.
By starting our trucks at 6 AM, our team can complete the bulk of the heavy lifting before the sun reaches its peak. This protects our W-2 employees, who are doing intense physical labor outdoors six days a week.
The impact on the waste
The extreme heat also changes the condition of the dog waste itself. When waste sits on hot rock or turf, the moisture evaporates rapidly, baking the residue directly into the hardscaping. This baked-on waste crumbles easily, making it difficult to remove cleanly from a gravel bed.
It also creates an overwhelming odor. When the afternoon sun bakes the organic residue trapped in turf backing, the smell can make a patio unusable. By servicing yards early in the day, we remove the waste before the afternoon heat maximizes the odor. If a customer has requested our enzyme and probiotic deodorizer add-on, applying the spray in the morning allows it to work on the surface before evaporating in the afternoon sun.
What this means for customers
The 6 AM start time requires a bit of coordination from our clients. If you are assigned a morning route window during the summer months, you must prepare your yard the night before.
Check your side gate is unlocked, or provide us with a combination code to keep securely on file. Because our technicians arrive early, it is crucial that any dogs that are highly anxious, protective, or have a history of biting are secured inside the house before we arrive. If a gate is locked and we have no code, or if an unsecured dog makes the yard unsafe, it counts as a completed visit and cannot be credited.
Our system will still send the “on the way” text to let you know the truck is heading to your neighborhood, and you will receive the completion text with a photo of your secured gate latch before we drive away.
We appreciate our clients adjusting their routines during the summer. Starting early is the only way we can reliably keep the valley clean when the temperature spikes.
