What yard deodorizing does and does not do

When the summer heat hits, removing the solid waste is often not enough to stop the smell. But it is important to know what an odor spray actually does.

Technician spraying yard deodorizer across artificial turf in a Las Vegas backyard

During the intense Las Vegas summer, when temperatures routinely climb over 100 degrees from June to September, backyard odors become a major problem. You can walk the yard, bag every piece of solid waste, and still find that your patio smells like a kennel by mid-afternoon.

This happens because picking up the solid waste leaves behind a microscopic layer of organic residue. On natural grass, soil microbes eventually help break this down. But on decorative rock, gravel, and especially artificial turf, that residue simply bakes into the surface. The heat amplifies the smell of that baked-in residue, making the yard unusable. To solve this, we offer a yard deodorizing add-on, but we want our clients to understand what this spray does and what it does not do.

What the deodorizer does

Our yard deodorizer is an enzyme and probiotic spray. It is formulated to handle the organic matter left behind by dog waste.

It breaks down residue: The enzymes in the spray actively break down the organic proteins in the residue that cause the lingering odors. Instead of just masking the smell with a heavy perfume, it attacks the source of the problem.

It works on hardscapes: The spray is highly effective on the surfaces that trap heat and odors the most: artificial turf, gravel beds, decorative rock, concrete patios and dog runs.

It is yard-safe: Because it relies on enzymes and probiotics rather than harsh chemicals, it is safe for the yard. Once the spray has completely dried, which usually takes about twenty minutes in the Las Vegas heat, your pets can safely return to the patio.

What the deodorizer does not do

There is a lot of misinformation in the pet waste removal industry about odor sprays. We never make claims we cannot back up with facts.

It is not a disinfectant: This is the most critical distinction. Our deodorizer is designed strictly for odor control. It does not chemically disinfect your yard.

It does not eliminate disease or parasites: Dog waste carries bacteria like E. coli and salmonella, as well as parasites like roundworm, hookworm and giardia. These hazards persist in the soil. The enzyme spray does not kill these parasites or eliminate these diseases. The only effective defense against parasites is removing the solid waste before it has time to break down into the soil.

It is not a permanent fix: The spray breaks down the existing residue, neutralizing the current odor. However, it does not permanently odor-proof your yard. As long as your dogs continue to use the turf or rock beds, new residue will accumulate, and the odor will eventually return. This is why we recommend applying it regularly, either with every visit or every other visit during the peak summer months.

How we apply it

The deodorizer only works effectively if the yard is properly prepared. We never just spray it over existing waste.

First, our technician walks a tight grid and removes all the solid waste. If you have artificial turf or a concrete patio, we require a working outdoor hose spigot so we can rinse the surface thoroughly to wash away the bulk of the residue. (We do not use pressure washers or apply chemicals to natural stone). Only after the area is cleared and rinsed do we apply the enzyme spray.

By understanding what the treatment actually does, you can use it effectively to reclaim your backyard during the hottest months of the year.
